A woman has shared the random thing that triggers her dog to start howling and social media users can’t get enough.
TikTok user @n0vy___ shared a hilarious video online on January 16 revealing the one thing she knows will cause her dog to start howling without hesitation. The post was stitched with a clip by TikTok user @tofu_corgi, asking for “the most random thing that triggers your dog.”
The video shows the owner searching online for the 2011 song “Someone Like You“ by Adele before she starts playing it—only for her dog Chase to react almost immediately. The rescue dog appears to recognize the melody as soon as the well-known song starts playing, and within a few seconds, he starts howling along to the song.
Needless to say, a harmless Adele song was not what social media users expected to trigger Chase. Since the clip was shared online, it has gone viral with more than 7.3 million views and over 1.2 million likes at the time of writing.
Newsweek contacted @n0vy___ via TikTok for comment.
Chase’s owner still isn’t sure exactly why he detests this particular Adele tune so much but the internet can’t get enough of his antics.
How Do Dogs Respond To Music?
It’s well known that dogs have impeccable hearing, so they can react differently to music than we’d expect. The American Kennel Club (AKC) highlights that dogs’ ears are far more sensitive than ours, meaning they can hear frequencies between 40 and 65,000 Hertz. Humans have a meagre 20 to 20,000 Hertz range.
The length and frequency of a musical note can therefore affect how a dog responds to it. For example, the AKC suggests that short notes played in quick succession can lead to rapid motor movements. Dogs are typically calmer when they listen to simple rhythms and sustained notes.
Musical genres such as classical, reggae and soft rock have been found to be the most calming for dogs, and if they hear the same music all the time, they tend to tune it out. Indeed, research shows that the relaxing effect of music declines once the dog perceives it as ambient noise.
Chase certainly doesn’t seem to regard Adele as calming, background music. He much prefers howling loudly over the top of her sentimental vocals.
The Social Media Response
Since the video of Chase howling along to Adele was shared online, TikTok users have lauded his unexpected reaction. This has led to more than 4,200 comments on TikTok in just a matter of days.
One comment reads: “Well we know who hurt Adele, but who hurt your DOG?”
Another TikTok user wrote: “He’s been so betrayed in another life.”
“I wasn’t expecting the intensity,” joked another commenter.
A different person responded: “He thinks he’s Adele.”
