Huntsville Animal Services urges community support as overcrowding worsens, with 93 dogs in the shelter and 29 in foster homes.
HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — Huntsville Animal Services is facing a critical situation as overcrowding continues to escalate at its shelter.
According to the shelter, since Saturday, 28 dogs have entered the shelter, bringing the total number of dogs being cared for to 93, with an additional 29 in foster homes. Despite efforts to place dogs in homes and transfers to rescue partners, the shelter remains full.
“Our team is giving everything they’ve got to keep every dog clean, fed, safe, and loved. But we can’t do it alone,” said the shelter in a Facebook post.
The shelter has been forced to double up some dogs in kennels meant for one. With the number of incoming strays still on the rise, staff is calling for immediate support to open 10-12 additional kennels.
To help, Huntsville Animal Services is encouraging the community to adopt or foster. Adoption is for those looking to provide a permanent home, while fostering can offer a temporary reprieve for a dog and open space at the shelter.
