Huntley man linked to investigation into 50+ dogs abandoned at Belvidere park takes plea deal

MCHENRY COUNTY, Ill. (WIFR) – A Huntley man is sentenced to one year of conditional discharge after striking a deal with McHenry County prosecutors in an animal cruelty case.

Bruce Walla, 55, pleaded guilty Jan. 31 to one count of misdemeanor animal cruelty. The Daily Herald reports in exchange for the plea, 18 counts of animal cruelty and 19 counts of violating animal owner’s duties were dropped. The Daily Herald also reports Walla owes $4,000 in restitution to McHenry County Animal Control.

Walla, along with 61-year-old Concepcion Rodriguez of Huntley, were arrested in September 2024 in connection with an investigation into the abandonment of 54 Maltese mixed-breed dogs at a Belvidere dog park. The investigation led detectives to a home in Huntley where authorities say they found probable cause for charges of animal cruelty. The home was also deemed uninhabitable due to health code violations.

Walla and Rodriguez were each charged with 19 counts of cruelty to animals and 19 counts of violation of owner’s duties in McHenry County. According to court records, Rodriguez is set to appear in McHenry County court on Feb. 19.

Rodriguez faces an additional 54 counts of cruelty to animals in Boone County. She is expected back in court on March 18.
