DUBOIS CO. – The Huntingburg Police Department has released details concerning a deadly dog attack that resulted in the death of a 4-year-old girl.
According to the report, officers responded to a home on North Geiger Street at approximately 3:30 p.m. on Monday following a report of a person found with blood around them.
Upon arrival, police and first responders discovered a 53-year-old Oliva Mora Regalado and a 4-year-old girl, Evelynn Lopez, both unresponsive, inside the residence.
Evelynn Lopez was immediately transported to Deaconess Memorial in Jasper but was later pronounced dead. Oliva Mora Regalado was pronounced dead at the residence.
The investigation and subsequent autopsies revealed that Oliva Mora Regalado suffered a fatal medical emergency due to a pre-existing medical condition. Following this emergency, and for unknown reasons, the dog(s) in the residence attacked Evelynn Lopez, the only other person present.
Authorities reported that six pitbulls and one Poodle mix were in the home at the time of the incident. For safety reasons and to preserve evidence, all dogs were sedated and euthanized at the scene. The dogs were then transported to the Southern Indiana Purdue Agriculture Center for further testing.
Police have stated that no criminal charges will be filed at this time.
