BROWARD COUNTY, Fla. – From playful kittens to mature dogs, the Humane Society of Broward County is spotlighting a variety of adoptable pets as the shelter continues to experience high intake during the summer season.
While appearing on Local 10’s “Adopt a Pet” segment on Saturday, HSBC’s Cherie Wachter introduced two kittens named DQ and Marshy, both available for adoption.
“We have so many great adult cats, kittens available for adoption at the shelter right now, and in honor of the Panthers winning the Stanley Cup, we have a special going on,” Wachter said. “You can adopt any feline for half price, which is a huge savings. That means you can buy them more toys and more treats.”
Wachter explained that cats, like people, have unique personalities and encouraged first-time adopters to take the time to get to know each animal.
“Cats and dogs, they’re like people — they all have different personalities,” she said. “Marshy, you know, came running up to the front, wanted to come out, very curious, very outgoing. DQ here was a little shyer. I had to pry her out from under the bed.”
Wachter added that while kittens are popular, adult cats have their own advantages.
“If everybody stayed little like this, they’d probably have homes forever,” she said. “But they do grow, and it’s important — a kitten or an adult cat is not set out to destroy your furniture. That’s why you need to give them proper things to scratch on.”
Kittens often do well in pairs, she noted, because “they will wrestle and tire each other out and then let you sleep through the night.”
With kitten season in full swing, shelters nationwide are overwhelmed.
“It is kitten season not only in South Florida but all over the country,” Wachter added. “Shelters are inundated with baby kittens. So, if you thought about adopting, now would be a great time to visit.”
She also shared a heartwarming update: a dog featured on the segment last week named Stella has found a home.
“Stella was a big girl … probably close to 70 pounds, a little bit older, but a Local 10 viewer saw the segment and they knew they had to make her part of the family,” she said. “They love her. She is a great dog.”
The shelter has also seen success with its Benny’s Buddies program, supported by Florida Panthers player Sam Bennett.
One of the dogs in that program is Tank, a 5-year-old whose adoption fee has been covered by Bennett.
“Tank was working with one of our trainers this morning and what she said about Tank was it’s nice that he’s a big dog and he doesn’t jump up on you,” Wachter said. “He loves to sit for a treat.”
Tank’s ideal home would be one with a dog similar in size.
“He’s probably not best with small animals and sadly his family, they were facing a medical situation and they were unable to take care of Tank any longer,” she said. “He’s probably been one of the dogs at the shelter that’s been there the longest, which is probably about maybe 6 to 8 weeks now, and you know, don’t look past him just because he grew up.”
