The Humane Society of Harrisburg Area is hosting an adoption special for adult dogs from now until Sunday.
DAUPHIN COUNTY, Pa. — People can choose to pay what they can for the adoption fee, from $1 to $100, from now until Sunday, April 6, at the Humane Society of Harrisburg Area.
It’s part of the organization’s ‘Petal for Paw.’
“Kind of in the celebration of spring we’re doing what we’re calling a ‘Petals and Paws’ adoption special, where any adult dog we have available for adoption, if it’s a fit for you and the dog, we’re doing a ‘pick your own price’ adoption fee,” said Amanda Brunish, director of marketing and outreach.
The adoption special is for adult dogs only and helps create space for more animals.
“Whether you can pay five dollars, a hundred dollars, we all think they’re worth a million dollars, but whatever you’re willing to pay for the adoption fee for any of our adult dogs, we are happy to give you that price,” Brunish said.
Every adoption is seen as a success, and the organization does not have an adoption goal.
However, spring is puppy and kitten season, and staff expect kennels to fill up as the weather gets warmer, making the need for space greater.
“We try to do a couple of adoption events every year. ‘Petals and Paw’ is kind of a new event for us, so this is our first time trying a ‘pick your price’ adoption special so we’re really excited for that,” Brunish said.
Brunish says adult animals can sometimes be overshadowed by their young counterparts, although they deserve just as much love.
“With a puppy or kitten, you’re obviously going to be starting them out with training, the potty, behavior, all that good stuff, where a dog like Tea, for example, you can see she is what she is,” Brunish said.
Adopting an adult dog may be less time-consuming and inexpensive compared to adopting a puppy.
“A lot of the adult animals have the basic training, the basic commands and you’re going to be helping an animal that has experience in life,” Brunish said
The adoption process is the same, the only difference is the price people are willing to pay for the adoption fee.
“If you’re interested in adoption, definitely come to our shelter, we’re open Tuesday through Sunday. You can see all the animals, specifically since we’re talking about dogs, you can see all the pups, and we’ll have you fill out a quick questionnaire to learn more about you, the kind of dogs you’re interested in, and we will do a meet-and-greet, see if we can make a love-match. Then you can pick your own price for your adoption fee,” Brunish said.
If a person is unable to adopt, the organization encourages food, toy and medical donations.
People can also volunteer to foster, dog walk and kitten sit.
