TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (Gray News) – The humane society that is fostering Trooper, the dog found tied to a pole and rescued ahead of Hurricane Milton, hopes that his story inspires “a kinder future for all dogs.”
The Leon County Humane Society posted an update about Trooper on their Facebook page on Tuesday.
They said Trooper is currently staying with a “wonderful” foster family who has experience with his breed. They said that Trooper is continuing to decompress and “enjoy all the good things in life.”
“His foster parents will learn more about him and have his best interests at heart,” the humane society said.
Officials reported Tuesday that Trooper’s previous owner, identified as Giovanny Aldama Garcia, has been charged with aggravated animal cruelty. According to WJHG, he told authorities that he was evacuating ahead of Milton and left his dog because he couldn’t find anyone to pick him up.
Florida Highway Patrol Trooper Orlando Morales later found Trooper after receiving a tip from a driver about an animal on the side of the road. Video of Trooper’s rescue was posted on the social media platform X by the Florida Highway Patrol Tampa.
In their Facebook post, the Leon County Humane Society thanked Morales for rescuing Trooper. They also thanked those who have been following Trooper’s story since the beginning.
“Thank you to everyone who has followed his story, for caring and advocating for those with no voice,” the humane society said.
The humane society highlighted that Trooper’s story is one of thousands of dogs “who deserve this same level of attention, care, and advocacy.” They encouraged people to visit and support their local shelters.
“There could be a dog right up the road who needs you, and Trooper is more than willing to take credit for bringing you together,” they said.
The family fostering Trooper will have the first opportunity to adopt Trooper. However, if the family believes their household is not right for Trooper, the humane society said they will start looking “for the perfect fit.”
