(PUEBLO, Colo.) — Two German Shepherd dogs are home safe with their owners after the Humane Society of the Pikes Peak Region (HSPPR) and the Pueblo Fire Department joined forces to rescue the stranded pups from the Arkansas River.
According to a post on HSPPR’s Facebook page, the Pueblo Police Department alerted Animal Law Enforcement (ALE) after multiple 911 calls were received about stranded dogs in the Arkansas River. HSPPR said ALE Officer Solero responded, and when she arrived on scene, she could not find the dogs but could hear them crying.
HSPPR said Officer Solero followed the howls and desperate cries, until she found the two German Shepherds, named Jack and Axel, stuck on a rock in the river. Solero quickly realized this rescue was simply too much for one person, so she called the Pueblo Fire Department for help.
“With both teams working together, firefighters rigged themselves to a fence and repelled down to the levee,” said HSPPR.
HSPPR said Officer Solero demonstrated how to use slip leads, and one by one, Jack and Axel were pulled up the embankment to safety.
“As soon as their feet hit the pavement, it was nonstop tail wags and tippy, tippy toes!” HSPPR said in its Facebook post. “The dogs were immediately reunited with their owner, and together, they walked back to their car for a relieving (and wet dog-smelling) ride back home.”
HSPPR praised the efforts of its ALE officer and the Pueblo Fire Department in reuniting the grateful dogs with their family.
“It took multiple teams to rescue both Jack and Axel, and we couldn’t be more proud of Officer Solero, the Pueblo Fire Department, and the Pueblo Police Department for all being a part of this rescue!” HSPPR said.
