How this nonprofit has helped protect hundreds of police dogs

Massachusetts Vest-A-Dog, a nonprofit that provides bullet-resistant vests for police dogs, is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year by participating in several community events, including First Responder’s Day on Saturday, May 17, at Southwick’s Zoo in Mendon, according to a community announcement.

Mendon-based Massachusetts Vest-A-Dog started as a grassroots initiative providing vests to police dogs. It has since expanded to supply essential equipment, specialized training and even K-9s to law enforcement agencies in Massachusetts, according to the announcement.

“This milestone is a testament to the incredible generosity of our donors and the unwavering dedication of our volunteers, board and law enforcement partners,” said Massachusetts Vest-A-Dog President David Shilale, in a statement. “Every dog we help equip, every team we support — it all comes back to our core belief that K-9 teams deserve the absolute best in safety, training and readiness. They are an invaluable resource to departments and public safety.”

On May 17, Massachusetts Vest-A-Dog will attend First Responder’s Day at Southwick’s Zoo, according to the announcement. The organization will also participate in various community events throughout the summer and fall and host its 2nd Annual Massachusetts State Police K-9 Frankie Memorial Golf Tournament on Friday, Sept. 26. All proceeds go toward continuing and expanding the organization’s work.

The organization funds and provides items such as heat alarms and kennel inserts for cruisers; bite suits; K-9 first aid kits; and all-season kennels. It also contributes to the purchase of “green” working line K-9s — dogs ready for police training — for departments in need.

“As a former K-9 handler, I have personally experienced the difference their dedication makes — not just in the safety of our canine partners, but in the success of our mission,” said Holliston Police Chief Matthew Stone, in a statement.

To date, Massachusetts Vest-A-Dog has supported hundreds of K-9 teams throughout the Commonwealth, ensuring that even the smallest departments have access to the same life-saving tools and resources as larger ones.

Massachusetts Vest-A-Dog’s latest grant round supported funding for three departments with new K-9 candidates and has numerous protective vests on order for other departments.
