How owner of “escape artist” dog keeps that spirit alive at 16 years old

A pet parent lets her senior dog run down the sidewalk as if she had successfully escaped, and the reason has brought some TikTok viewers to tears.

The owner said in a recent post to her TikTok account, @smileymileystaffy, that her Staffordshire bull terrier, Miley, used to be an “escape artist” in her younger years. The dog would escape and search for “attention” while they were away at work. Once Miley got a taste of running free, she wouldn’t stop attempting to break out, even after her owner started working from home.

However, now that Miley is 16½ years old, her idea of escaping isn’t what she thinks it is anymore. Wanting to keep that spirit alive, Miley’s owner wrote in the caption that she leaves the gate open and will “let” Miley escape. It’s fun for the whole family, as Miley believes she’s still a smooth escape artist and the owner’s toddler “loves catching her.”

In the video, Miley is seen waddling down the sidewalk as fast as her senior body can go. Not too far behind her are her owner and her toddler sibling. They’re walking with a stroller, ready to take Miley back when she gets tired from her escape run, which, according to the text on the video, isn’t too far.

The owner wrote in the comments section that she bought the beach trolley for Christmas specifically for Miley. It allows the dog to wander around a bit more without having to worry about using her senior legs on the journey back home.

Miley’s escapes don’t always happen while they’re at home. The owner also said in the comments section that sometimes they’ll be in the front yard with Miley and then all of a sudden she takes off.

As for her ability to walk, the owner wrote: “Vets have said her joints are amazing, no arthritis or anything. They think it’s a form of dementia where the brain and neurons aren’t working together anymore.”
