LUBBOCK, Texas — Just like humans, dogs enjoy outdoor summer activities, however, it is important to be aware of the dangers the summer weather poses for your furry friends.

Taylor Ruggles with the Lubbock Animal Shelter told EverythingLubbock.com that it is important to be mindful of the temperature when taking your dog outside.

In the summer, the temperature outside may be too hot for your dog and can cause them to overheat.

Ruggles suggested only allowing your dog outside for five to ten minutes in 90-degree temperatures.

“If it’s too hot to keep your hand on the ground, it’s too hot for their paws,” Ruggles said.

Walking your dog in the morning or at night is a good alternative to avoid being outside during the hotter parts of the day.

“Some dogs do totally fine outside,” Ruggles said. “It is very breed-dependent, do your research and figure out what they can handle.”

Dogs with thick and long hair might not withstand the same amount of time outside as dogs with short hair.

Regardless of their breed, dogs should always have access to shade and clean water when outside, Ruggles said.

Signs your dog is overheating are if your dog is lethargic, has excess drooling, muscle tremors, changes in color, diarrhea or vomit. If they show any signs of overheating, immediately give your dog water. Ruggles urged not to put them in an ice bath or use a wet towel to prevent their body from going into shock. If your dog’s symptoms don’t improve, please take them to the vet.

The Favicon for the website, dogsandpurses(dot)com, features an all-black background with a minimalist line drawing of a puppy's head poking out of a stylish purse. The puppy's head is drawn with a cute and friendly expression, making it the focal point of the design. The purse, which the puppy is emerging from, is depicted with clean, elegant lines. The contrast between the black background and the white line drawing creates a striking and modern look for the Favicon.
