How cat responds to dog sibling passing away breaks hearts

A cat’s reaction to losing his canine brother has broken hearts on the internet in a clip that immediately went viral all over social media.

The video, shared on TikTok in September by the pets’ owner, under the username @breeseff, shows footage of the cat, named Stache because of his unusual mustache, sitting on his late sibling, Barney’s bed, with his head down as if grieving the 14-year-old pup. The second part of the clip shows Barney and Stache playing together, and doing everything a bonded pair of pets do, from sharing food to ambushing each other.

“My dog passed 4 days ago. This is the first time my cat has been on his bed. My cat grew up with him from 6 months old. They were a bonded pair. I wasn’t the only one who lost their best friend,” reads a caption shared along with the post.

Cats and dogs have historically been portrayed as enemies, but this narrative isn’t true. A study carried out by Italian scientists and published in 2020 in the journal PLOS ONE surveyed 1,270 pet owners who own both a cat and a dog and found that the two can easily cohabit without much conflict.

Findings from the study showed that over 64 percent of the cats and dogs living together also played together; 58 percent chased each other; and 41 percent fought. Almost two-thirds of the pets sometimes playfully “ambushed” each other.

Moreover, cats are more likely to ignore dogs than vice versa, with 42 percent of felines ignoring canines, and 28 percent of dogs shunning cats. Felines were also more likely to attack than vice versa.

The video quickly went viral on social media, getting viewers from across TikTok. It has so far received over 6.6 million views and more than 1.5 million likes on the platform.

One user, Kyia Stewart, commented: “Their fur matched…..ugh I’m sobbing.”

Yoda posted: “In my culture all of our little friends, become spirit guides after death and when our time comes, they will guide us to the afterlife. You and everyone else will see them once again, in time.”

Adam added: “My house felt so different coming home and my dog wasn’t there jumping and yipping at me. Just empty silence.”

Newsweek reached out to @breeseff for comment via TikTok comments. We could not verify the details of the case.

The Favicon for the website, dogsandpurses(dot)com, features an all-black background with a minimalist line drawing of a puppy's head poking out of a stylish purse. The puppy's head is drawn with a cute and friendly expression, making it the focal point of the design. The purse, which the puppy is emerging from, is depicted with clean, elegant lines. The contrast between the black background and the white line drawing creates a striking and modern look for the Favicon.
