House fire displaces West Jordan family and kills 2 dogs

WEST JORDAN — A family in West Jordan has been forced from their home after a devastating fire broke out, leaving their house unlivable.

West Jordan fire officials said it happened Wednesday about 4 p.m. near 5600 West and 6700 South.

While all family members managed to escape the flames, one individual was taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation. Tragically, two family dogs did not survive the fire.

Neighbor Charis Sivulka recalled the terrifying moment she noticed the fire.

“I look out my window, and I just see flames coming out of the first window over there — the big window. It’s like huge flames, crazy,” Sivulka said.

Panicked, Charis quickly called her father, Rob Sivulka, who was out on carpool duty.

“I’m like, ‘Hey, the neighbor’s house is on fire right now. I’m not sure what to do,'” Charis Sivulka said.

Rob Sivulka, though concerned, kept calm and offered guidance.

“She was kind of freaking out,” Rob Sivulka said. “I told her, ‘You better call 911 and you better start videoing.'”

By the time Rob Sivulka returned home, the street was packed with emergency vehicles.

“This whole street was just filled with fire trucks,” he said.

“I’ve never witnessed a house fire before, and it was just so much flames. It was insane,” Charis Sivulka added.

The fire spread quickly, and Charis and Rob Sivulka were shocked at how fast the situation unfolded. They know the family who lived in the now-charred house and shared their heartfelt sympathy.

“(May) the Lord have mercy on them,” Rob Sivulka said. “It’s just a shame that something like this happened.”

West Jordan fire crews faced additional challenges during the firefight, noting the danger of a potential floor collapse. As investigators worked late into the evening collecting evidence and taking photos, cleanup crews arrived to secure the structure.

For now, the house remains uninhabitable, and the cause of the fire is under investigation.
