FORT PIERCE — A Christmas Day fire in a four-unit residential building ended in safety for all the residents of the building, including two dogs and a turtle who had to be treated at the scene, officials said Wednesday.
St. Lucie County firefighters responded at 8:33 a.m. to reports of a fire in the 300 block of North 13th Street, just north of Avenue B, that may have trapped people and animals inside, the district said.
Firefighters found fire and smoke in the back bedroom of one of the units, fire officials said. Crews searched the home and rescued the dogs and the turtle. The residents escaped unharmed, according to the fire district.
Firefighters doused the blaze. The cause of the fire is under investigation, fire officials said. The American Red Cross is assisting the residents who were displaced. The Red Cross said in a news release that five people — three adults and two children — from two families had been affected.
