Hoboken + Jersey City Pups Can Now Audition to Be Therapy Dogs

A NYC-based nonprofit recently expanded to the Hudson County area, meaning Hoboken and Jersey City pups can now apply to be a therapy dog for the organization. The Good Dog Foundation trains and certifies therapy dogs who then visit people in hospitals, nursing homes, schools, and more. The next round of therapy dog evaluations will take place in Jersey City on May 18th, with official classes starting in early June. Read on for more about The Good Dog Foundation’s expansion to Hoboken and Jersey City, and how owners can get their pups involved with the organization.

How Can My Dog Become a Therapy Dog?

If you think your dog would be a good fit as a therapy dog, this organization is for you. The Good Dog Foundation recently expanded its services to the Hoboken and Jersey City area, and will be evaluating pups for its therapy dog program this weekend.

The organization shared with The Hoboken Girl that evaluations will take place on Sunday, May 18th in Jersey City. The nonprofit is looking for dogs who are over a year old, and meet the following qualifications:

Zap Fitness
  • Walks politely + can sit/down/stay/leave it on cue
  • Keeps four feet on the floor when greeting
  • Likes or tolerates the presence of dogs
  • Loves meeting new people

Owners must also demonstrate control over their dog at all times. If your dog is selected for the program, therapy dog classes will take place starting on Sunday, June 1st.

So, how can owners apply for the program? First, you’ll have to complete an online application here. The application will be reviewed by a Good Dog trainer, and if accepted, you and your dog will be invited for an in-person evaluation. During the evaluation, the trainer will observe your dog’s obedience skills, temperament, sociability with humans and other dogs, as well as its relationship with you, per the website. After the evaluation, the trainer will determine if you and your dog are appropriate candidates for the Therapy Skills course.

The Therapy Skills course is a series of four weekly 90-minute in-person classes that lets the trainers observe your dog over time, assess skill retention, and provide correctives. The fee for the course is $280.

After the training is complete, the next step is to have a veterinarian “clear” your dog for therapy work, as well as a shadow visit — accompanied by a Good Dog trainer or staff member who is there to support you and assess your skills. “The goal is to ensure you and your dog are comfortable and ready to operate on your own in a therapy environment,” the website says.

If the shadow visit is successful, your dog can officially become a certified therapy dog. Owners will be mailed a Certification Packet with credentials enabling you and your dog to volunteer at Good Dog Partner Facilities. Dogs can volunteer with you as the handler for one hour per day (to protect them from fatigue and stress in challenging environments).

More information about the therapy dog process can be found on the website here. The post will be updated with any further comments about the Jersey City evaluations.

The Favicon for the website, dogsandpurses(dot)com, features an all-black background with a minimalist line drawing of a puppy's head poking out of a stylish purse. The puppy's head is drawn with a cute and friendly expression, making it the focal point of the design. The purse, which the puppy is emerging from, is depicted with clean, elegant lines. The contrast between the black background and the white line drawing creates a striking and modern look for the Favicon.
