GIFT BAG SERVES AS LUNCH BAG
Dear Heloise: I rarely throw out a gift bag. Where I work, we bring our lunch and eat in the employee lounge. So, I use those gift bags to carry my lunch in and reuse them several times before I toss them out. They’re usually kind of ratty-looking by then. But not only am I recycling, I’m saving money by not having to buy a stack of lunch bags. — Cindy H., Cape Coral, Florida
GETTING DOGS TO EAT THEIR FOOD
Dear Heloise: I read your column in the Houston Chronicle every day. It has been a part of my morning ritual for many enjoyable years. Thank you.
I am a dog person. We have two Labrador Retrievers. Every now and then, one of our dogs will go “off” of their food, but I have a simple solution that works every time: I put beef or chicken broth in a spray bottle. I just spritz a couple of sprays onto their dry food, and voila! They gobble it down! Stay well. — Rob L., in Housto
DIGITAL DATING
Dear Heloise: In this world of AI and new technology, we now have dating sites. I signed up to two different sites and got several responses, but I’ve heard horror stories! Any hints for a small-town 28-year-old woman who wants to meet a nice guy? — Lynn F. (An Avid Reader of Heloise)
Lynn, first, you might try an online site called DatingScout.com. It’s free, and it can help you find the right dating sites that match your wants and needs. They rank the dating sites accordingly.
Next, be truthful about what you like and don’t like on the application. If you’re adding a photograph or two, it’s recommended that you use one portrait photo and maybe a full-body shot. The photographs can be shots of you from a cellphone.
Limit the time you spend online looking or reading messages from men who are interested. Dating sites can become addictive.
Delete any site that does not meet your expectations. This also applies to men who message you and have nothing in common with you or offend you by word or photograph. Immediately drop anyone who:
- Asks for money. (No exceptions!)
- Wants to rush you into a relationship. Always go slow.
- Makes you feel uncomfortable or wants too much information upfront, such as your address, your full name, etc. — Heloise
CANNED ADMISSIONS
Dear Heloise: My husband and I love to entertain family and friends. We had a barbecue over the weekend, and our admission was one canned, nonperishable food item.
I work with a charitable foundation that helps to feed underprivileged people. We don’t always see hunger on people, but it’s out there. More and more people need help feeding their families. Most of our friends bring anywhere from three to six cans. These are difficult times financially for many people, so every little bit helps. — Redonna N., Baton Rouge, Louisiana
SAVING ON AC
Dear Heloise: As a retiree on a fixed income living in these record inflation times, I am looking to save money on my air conditioning. I realized I have multiple blankets stored in my closet that can act as insulators to the heat.
So, I placed them on the outside walls behind my couch, china cabinet, desk, dresser, storage closet and bookshelf. And it cost me nothing but my time! — D., in Ohio
