Herding dog mistakes poodle for a sheep, instincts immediately kick in

A clip on TikTok of a herding dog’s reaction to her poodle friend coming over proved how a canine’s ancestry history still runs deep.

A pet parent invited her friend and her friend’s dog over for a playdate with her Australian cattle dog Ayra. Australian cattle dogs, also known as herding breeds, are loyal and intelligent. They can control the movement of other animals and sometimes they will try moving their owners gently.

But Ayra’s owner told Newsweek via TikTok that her dog doesn’t typically show these herding instincts. She’ll notice these herding traits every once in a while. The playdate, however, was different. Ayra mistook the poodle who came over for a sheep and jumped right into the role she was born to do.

In the clip posted yesterday by TikTok user @arya_the_cattle_dog, Ayra was across the yard eyeing the “sheep” who invaded her yard. Head down and tracking the poodle’s movement, she was ready for her job.

Ayra even looked stoked for her chance to finally herd an animal. A smile spread across her face as she got down to business.

The owner estimated that Arya kept at this behavior for at least a minute. It took her by surprise too.

“We have two dogs and she has never done it to her sister!” she said.

Meanwhile, the poodle was totally unbothered by Ayra’s behavior. The dog sat down to catch her breath after playing. And if she did spot Arya stalking her from across the yard, she didn’t care.

“My friend and I were cracking up,” she said. “I think the poodle had no idea what was happening.”
