HENDERSON, Texas (KLTV) – An East Texas animal shelter is in their second year of using a volunteer program to prepare dogs for adoption.
Henderson Animal Center Director Charissa Pool spoke about their Bark in the Park program which uses the help of volunteers to train shelter dogs. Poole explained that the program is essentially a foster program, in which the volunteers do their best to get the animals associated with a healthy home life.
“It could just be basic training on how to sit on how to behave properly on a leash,” said Poole. “Or, you know, you could take it as far as you want to go. So it’s just kind of up to the trainer and what they’d like to do.”
The program was started a year ago by Sabine High School senior Joe Ray, who also spoke about the program. According to Ray, the goal is to make the animals more attractive to potential adoptive families.
“It makes them more adaptable because it’s it’s a big curve, like when you first adopt a dog and it’s a stray or a rescue, and you got to teach it all the like, sit and, you know, use the bathroom outside, you got to do all that. This is the kind of make them more adoptable so it’s easier for them to transition into someone’s home,” Ray said.
