A dog’s reaction to hearing a familiar song from his kennel days has touched thousands online.
The dog’s owner, known on Instagram as @thorless2, shared a video capturing the moment his pup, a Bernedoodle, recognized the tune that he once heard during nights in his kennel. The clip quickly went viral, garnering 53,500 likes and 413,800 views.
“When Hoss recognizes his favorite song from his puppy playlist that helped him sleep at night in his kennel,” read the caption over the video.
In the video, as the intro to P!nk’s Love Me Anyway, featuring Chris Stapleton, begins to play, Hoss, a cross between a poodle and a Bernese mountain dog, immediately reacts and turns to his owner, clearly recognizing the melody.
His tail wags, and he paws at his human. Studies show that dogs have a unique relationship with music, with certain sounds helping to calm and even trigger specific memories.
Experts believe that, much like humans, dogs may associate familiar tunes with past experiences.
According to Wag Walking, research suggests that dogs can recognize certain melodies, react to different sounds and can even have musical preferences.
This recognition might explain Hoss’s reaction to hearing his favorite song from his kennel days, as the tune likely reminds him of a time when it provided reassurance.
Boarding kennels and pet experts frequently use calming music to help anxious dogs relax during their stays.
Hoss’s reaction struck a chord with viewers, who poured in comments about their own dogs’ memories and musical preferences.
“Amazing, a dog’s memory and the feelings they have. Thanks for this video upload,” one viewer said. Another said: “He’s saying; ‘Please don’t send me back there!'”
One dog owner shared their own experience, saying, “We do not deserve animals! My dog has me sing Imagine by John Lennon every single night. And I have, since the night I brought him home 5 yrs ago. He whines when he hears it in the jeep on playlist.”
Another user chimed in, “He said ‘papa papa that’s it! That’s the song!'”
