OTTUMWA, Iowa (KYOU) –
In October of this year, Heartland Humane Society moved into their new facility on Fox Sauk road in Ottumwa. Assistant Manager of Heartland, Courtney Monohon, says keeping the dogs inside is the main priority.
But that’s been hard with more strays coming in. Monohon says they’re at capacity. But most times, people leave her with no other option when they tell her, “Then we’ll just take it out and shoot it. Or we’ll take it out and dump it. That’s the sad case, we don’t know whether they’re telling the truth or they’re just blowing smoke. “
“This job makes me look at people differently… unfortunately,” Monohon said with disappointment.
Monohon says she can’t let those animals go back to that kind of treatment. She says, “We don’t want to take that chance and so we just… find new places for them. “
Since all the dogs need to be inside during the cold winter. There is even less room for strays than normal.
They’re still using their old facility as well as some rooms not intended for dogs. Monohon explained by saying, “We had to keep a dog in the conference room, we had to keep a dog in the office. The only other spot was the bathroom. “
It’s not hard to tell that Monohon and the staff here care greatly for these animals. But she says the job can be overwhelming at times.
Monohon expressed her disappointment by saying, “You would think you would get used to it… but you don’t. Especially after seeing the dog(s) and seeing what condition they’re sometimes in. It is better that they’re here. “
