TRINITY COUNTY, Calif. — A Hayfork woman is now prohibited from owning or possessing animals for 10 years after a number of her dogs terrorized the Hayfork community, leading to an attack on a child and the death of a small puppy.
Meagan Marie Moon, 42, was convicted on Wednesday, Nov. 6, for felony animal abuse and neglect, as well as allowing a dog to attack a person or animal, the Trinity County District Attorney’s Office announced.
According to records, Moon had been keeping many dogs at her home. The dogs developed a reputation for reputation for harassing and attacking Hayfork residents.
Earlier in the year, on Sept. 19, a girl was attacked by one of the dogs, causing injuries that sent to the child to the emergency room. After the attack, the DA’s Office said Trinity County Animal Control officers responded to Moon’s home and seized the dogs for quarantine.
During the quarantine period, the DA’s Office said one puppy was found to be suffering from a gash in its neck and an adult dog had a festering wound in its armpit. They said the puppy was treated at a local animal hospital, however, it succumbed to its injuries.
As a result of her conviction, the Tehama County District Attorney’s Office said Moon will be statutorily prohibited from owning or possessing animals for a period of ten years.
