Companions Animal Center welcomed several small dogs and puppies to aid shelters in California as they navigate overcrowding due to the LA wildfires.
HAYDEN, Idaho — Companions Animal Center (CAC) in Hayden is making extra room to receive several dogs from Los Angeles, all of which were already in the LA shelters and are now looking for forever homes.
“Nine littles, we got one momma with 6-day-old puppies, two medium size dogs, and one that weighs 50 pounds,” said Debbie Jeffrey, the executive director at CAC.
The dogs were flown in by Los Angeles’ Paws for Life K9 Rescue, a nonprofit that is helping fly hundreds of animals all over the country to relieve LA area animal shelters. 14 small dogs touched down in Hayden on Sunday.
“One never knows what’s going to happen up here, maybe one day we will need something in return. That they can help us,” said Jeffrey. “Neighbors help neighbors. And I don’t care if its your neighbor across the street or down in California.”
A Spokane mother-daughter duo is also providing aid on the ground in LA with the American Red Cross to help displaced people care for their pets.
“I was notified the day the fires started if I could travel in the next 24 hours and I did,” said Paige McKee.
McKee has been the Red Cross’s pet liaison for the last several weeks and her daughter, Avery, joined her to help bring some sort of normalcy to families who are navigating the devastation caused by the fires.
“We get crates, we get leashes, we get food, we get dog beds, we get toys, we get special diets,” said McKee. “We do whatever it takes for them to have their pet with them…It gives them that sense of peace so they can move on to the next place.”
CAC says the dogs who arrived on Sunday could be up for adoption as early as Tuesday, Jan. 28, depending on processing. Those interested in adopting a dog can visit the shelter’s website.
