The raging wildfires across California have wreaked havoc, claiming at least six lives and causing widespread destruction to property and land. The Palisades fire has become the most devastating in Los Angeles, displacing nearly 2,00,000 residents. Dry conditions and strong winds continue to fuel the flames, showing no signs of subsiding. Emergency teams are working tirelessly around the clock to contain the blazes and mitigate the damage.

Amid the widespread circulation of gripping videos showcasing the deadly wildfires and intense firefighting efforts, one unusual clip has caught the Internet’s attention. In it, Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD) officials are seen using what appear to be small handbags to battle the active flames, leaving many puzzled by the unconventional method.

Circulated widely on the internet, the video has raised questions among social media users. Many have expressed concerns about the efficiency of LAFD at a time when the massive wildfires have been raging for days in Los Angeles and surrounding areas of California.

In the video, a group of firefighting officials could be seen filling small bags with water from the vehicles and rushing to put off the fire in a neighbourhood. One can also spot a number of fire engines lined up in the area with another team pulling the hose to put off the fire-engulfed buildings while others rushed with water-filled bags on the other side.

While some social media users have criticised the LAPD’s access to professional firefighting equipment, others have clarified that the “handbags” seen in the video are not women’s bags but rather specialized equipment owned by the department itself for handling fire incidents.

Amid the online scrutinisation, the LAFD officials spoke to TMZ, clarifying that the bags seen in the videos were actually “canvas bags” that firefighters bring on engines for various jobs when tackling a small trash fire like the one shown in the videos. “It is easier to quickly fill in water and extinguish the flames than to pull out the entire hose. Hooking up fire hoses and hydrants takes time and with fires spreading so quickly, they have to act fast. Timing is everything,” the department said.

It has been nearly a week since wildfires have been ravaging the Pacific Palisades, further wreaking havoc in the Eaton, Sunset, Hurst, Lidia, Hollywood Hills and other regions.
