GULF SHORES, Ala. (WPMI) — The Gulf Shores Police Department is seeking volunteers to help with walking dogs that are temporarily housed at the station.
Recently, the department has seen an uptick in the number of dogs that have been turned in or picked up off the street. Detective Carl Wittstruck says at one point the department had up to seven dogs in its care, which is unprecedented. Due to the recent increase, Wittstruck says the idea for the dog walking program came up.
“It kind of increases the public awareness of the dogs that are available for adoption, and it also helps us socialize the animals and gives us a frame of reference as to the personality of each dog,” he said.
Mindy Wethington, a Gulf Shores resident, adopted a dog from the GSPD last week. She says the adoption process was simple and easy.
“I would suggest it to anyone that is willing to help out. These dogs need a good home,” she said.
If you are interested in helping but unable to walk one of the dogs, Wittstruck says there are other ways to help. Checks can be dropped off at the station made out to the Gulf Shores Police Association with a note that the money is for “furry friends.” The money will help with vet visits and immunizations for the dogs.
GSPD is also searching for people who are willing to foster or adopt a dog who is not claimed by an owner. To apply to be a volunteer or for more information on how you can help, contact the Gulf shores Police Department.
