Great Barrington teacher charged with animal cruelty after witnesses report dog abuse

GREAT BARRINGTON — A town resident and schoolteacher was arrested Tuesday on allegations that he beat, punched, threw and choked his dogs.

Samuel DeMello, 34, was charged with two counts of animal cruelty, a felony. His arraignment in Southern Berkshire District Court was scheduled for Tuesday, Feb. 18, by Clerk Magistrate Shawn Kelly.
