WACO, Texas (KWTX) – Community members and volunteers from the Humane Society of Central Texas are coming together to think of a solution for Waco’s stray dog problem.
Ken Willits volunteers at the Humane Society every morning, and says he’s worried about stray animals as the weather gets hotter every day.
“We got the four of July coming,” Willits notes, “that means fireworks and dogs get scared they break through fences they jump over fences.”
Willits helped form the group known as the Grassroots Stray Dog Committee in Waco, and attendees like Tim Prefume say they want a better solution for homeless animals instead of euthanasia.
“You can’t put something like this to sleep just because you can’t find a home for them,” Prefume said.
Willits says he just wants to start a conversation with the city that may lead to a solution.
“I know there’s so many answers to the problem but until we get together and talk about it and move forward and try to address those issues and fix them, then people are just talking,” Willits said.
The Grassroots Stray Dog Committe say they will be at the next city council meeting to talk with the city.
The Committee will also attend the Waco Animal Advisory board meeting on the last Wednesday of the month.
We reached out to the city of Waco and Mayor Holmes but have not heard a response yet.
