PLAINVILLE, Conn. (WFSB/Gray News) – A Connecticut woman is calling for accountability, claiming part of her dog’s tongue was clipped off at the groomers.

The owner of a dog named Teddy is angry after the alleged incident during an April 4 grooming at Dirty Tails in Plainville. She says the salon is not taking responsibility and is trying to dismiss the situation, WFSB reports.

“I just want people to know what happened. I want to protect other animals,” Teddy’s owner said.

Teddy has been getting groomed at Dirty Tails for years, and his owner says they had nothing but pleasant experiences with the business until the alleged incident occurred.

Teddy left his recent appointment bleeding from his mouth, his owner says. She alleges part of the dog’s tongue was clipped off.

“I was carrying him out without looking at him, and when I got to the car, there was blood on my sweater, my hand and my wallet. When I looked at him, he was panting, and the blood was dripping from his tongue onto the ground,” Teddy’s owner said. “It was really scary. I felt really bad for him.”

Teddy’s owner immediately called the veterinarian, who told her it was the groomer’s responsibility to get medical attention for the dog, so she went back to Dirty Tails after the salon had closed for the night.

“I went down there, and I was asking her, pleading and begging, to talk to a manager. She says there’s no manager available… I’m like, ‘At least can I talk to her over the phone?’ Nothing. she was very dismissive,” the owner claimed.

Scott Reckert, a spokesperson for Dirty Tails, says the business regrets the Friday night incident.

“Our staff member did meet the client at the door indicating that she could not let her into the shop as it was after business hours,” Reckert said. “She further indicated that she is not a groomer nor a manager and has no authority to offer any type of resolution to this matter.”

Teddy’s owner says a manager finally called her three days later and issued her a refund, but she says that doesn’t compensate for what happened to her beloved pet.

“His tongue is permanently damaged, so it will never grow back,” Teddy’s owner said. “I don’t want to damage anyone’s business; however, I believe in accountability and being responsible. I believe in treating individuals fairly and with compassion, and I got none of that.”

Dirty Tails stands by their efforts in relation to the alleged incident, saying the business remains “open and optimistic that we can provide some relief and solace to the owner in this matter.”

“We remain dedicated to provide the best possible service to our clients,” the business said.

Police were called to the salon when the owner came back at night with Teddy, but no charges are pending on either side.
