A golden retriever’s adorable bond with his grandma has delighted the internet, even enjoying FaceTime calls with his favorite human when she’s not around.
Dog owner Lacie Lind loved observing the close relationship between her dog, Oakley and his grandma, but as it turns out, they don’t have to be together to show how close they are. Indeed, when Oakley’s grandma can’t come over, she will happily video chat her granddog and see if she can cheer him up.
On July 11, Lind shared the sweetest clip on TikTok (@lacielind) showing the moment Oakley FaceTimed with his grandma one evening. The cute video has melted hearts online, generating over 1.4 million views and more than 193,900 likes on TikTok so far.
The caption alongside the video reads: “Anyone else having full conversations with their golden?”
A 2022 study by researchers at Eötvös Loránd University in Hungary revealed that dogs could identity their owners based on the sound of their voice. The data also revealed that dogs can use other acoustic cues to discriminate their owner’s voice from unfamiliar ones, showing that dogs use some of the identifying factors humans use, but not all of them.
The data of the study was based on 28 different dogs, whose owners hid behind a wall with a stranger. The dog could hear their owner and the stranger’s voice, and most of the time the dog was able to seek out their owner just by tracking down the sound of their voice.
While it isn’t clear how much a dog can understand the concept of a video call, they can certainly pick up on the sound of the voice on the other end. The American Kennel Club (AKC) even suggests trying this out at home as owners could record the sound of their own voices and playing the audio around the house, just to see if their pup follows it.
There’s no doubt that Oakley recognized the sound of his grandma’s voice through the phone, as he even seemed engaged during the call. When she broke the news that she wouldn’t see him that week, he dropped his head sorrowfully. However, all was not lost because as soon as she talked about their next playdate, Oakley instantly cheered up and tilted his head excitedly.
After the clip went viral, many social media users wanted to see Oakley’s all-important date with his grandma and her dog, Daisy. Of course, TikToker Lind did not disappoint, as she posted a follow-up video showing how much fun he got to have.
Social media users can’t get enough of the dog’s precious FaceTime call with his grandma, leading to over 700 comments on the viral post so far. One comment reads: “He totally understands her.”
Another TikTok user wrote: “Omg!!!! This is the new grandkids generation.”
“Can you smile for Grandma? That is beyond adorable,” added one person.
While another comment jokes: “You can tell he’s Mr extra spoiled when grandma is there.”
