Golden retriever vs. FedEx driver shows why they “can’t be guard dogs”

A video of a canine’s response to coming face to face with a FedEx driver proved to the owner why golden retrievers “can’t be guard dogs.”

Instead of barking to warn his owner about the arrival of a delivery driver, Frank the golden retriever looked at the FedEx employee as a new friend in a March 12 TikTok video posted to the account @accordingtobelieve. The home security camera captured Frank wagging his tail as the driver hopped out of the truck, following him every step of the way to the front door.

When the driver dropped the package off at the door, he asked Frank to sit, and he happily obliged. The driver snapped a photo for proof of delivery with Frank proudly posing. Even though he wasn’t acting like a guard dog by alerting or defending the house, Frank did look after the package.

His protective instincts are present, but he did not use them in the right setting. Plus, he didn’t guard the package for long. A follow-up video shows Frank following the driver back to the truck. The FedEx employee tried playing with Frank by throwing a squeaky toy for him, but Frank didn’t seem to care. He was only interested in getting another treat for being a good boy.

Frank’s reaction to the driver didn’t surprise his owner. He told Newsweek via TikTok that Frank is like this with everyone, no matter where they go.

“His top priorities are food and people,” he said. “He comes with us almost everywhere that allows him to.”

FedEx shared with Newsweek the following statement: “FedEx is proud of the many contributions our team members make to our communities every day. We appreciate the interactions of this team member with a customer’s pet.”

Viewer Reactions

With over 15.6 million views and 2.5 million likes on TikTok as of Tuesday, people flooded the comment section, defending Frank and how he protected the house.

“I disagree the picture clearly shows he’s guarding the package,” pointed out one viewer.

Another added: “He did a great job ‘retrieving’ the mail.”

A third person commented: “Proof he’s guarding the house….with loves.”

Several users agreed that golden retrievers aren’t cut out for being house protectors: “My golden is a terrible guard dog….however, he is an EXCELLENT alert dog….a leaf blowing in the wind and he will make sure I know about it.”

The puppy's head is drawn with a cute and friendly expression, making it the focal point of the design. The purse, which the puppy is emerging from, is depicted with clean, elegant lines. The contrast between the black background and the white line drawing creates a striking and modern look for the Favicon.
