This week, Rep. Marie Gluesenkamp Perez (WA-03), Blue Dog Coalition Co-Chair on Administration, joined a majority of the Blue Dog Coalition, led by Rep. Adam Gray (CA-13), in publishing an op-ed in The Hill advocating for fiscal responsibility in the reconciliation process.
“Unrestrained fiscal policy has plagued the United States for decades – and it has not been limited to one side of the aisle,” the Blue Dogs wrote. “While members of Congress sit insulated on Capitol Hill and alternate between irresponsible tax cuts and excessive spending, life gets worse for everyday Americans.”
As a nation, servicing our national debt is our second highest expenditure, behind only Social Security. Despite the harsh fiscal reality, the One Big Beautiful Bill Act looks to stoke inflation by increasing the deficit by $3.8 trillion. This irresponsible spending comes as America’s credit rating plummets, increasing borrowing costs for folks across the nation.
“So far in the 119th Congress, the majority hasn’t shown much of an appetite to deviate from this trajectory. In order to hand out tax breaks to the ultrawealthy, the Republican reconciliation package would make devastating cuts to food assistance programs, health coverage, and other federal resources that hard-working Americans rely on to make ends meet,” the Blue Dogs continued. “Is it so important to our colleagues across the aisle to give a handout to their mega-wealthy buddies that they would strap everyday Americans with even more crushing debt?”
This op-ed was co-authored by Reps. Vicente Gonzalez (TX-34), Blue Dog Coalition Communications Co-Chair, Lou Correa (CA-46), Blue Dog Coalition Policy Co-Chair, Jared Golden (ME-02), Jim Costa (CA-21), Sanford Bishop (GA-02), and Henry Cuellar (TX-28).
“At a time where costs are rising, confidence in government is sinking, and Americans are eager for change, we remain committed to using a steady hand to deliver pragmatic policies that most Americans agree on,” they concluded. “In that spirit, our offer still stands. We are eager to work with our Republican colleagues to solve the issues facing our country and deliver results to the American people.”
