3rd December 2024 – (Hong Kong) Following a dramatic heist at GINZA XIAOMA in Central’s New World Tower, where thieves made off with 66 Hermès handbags valued at over HK$10 million, the store’s management has implemented immediate security enhancements.
The robbery occurred early on Saturday morning, with three masked assailants breaking through two security barriers in just three minutes to steal the luxury items. In a local media interview, store representative Mr. Chao expressed disbelief, stating, “I never expected such a bold robbery to happen in a Class A office building in Central.”
CCTV footage revealed the thieves expertly shattering the reinforced glass door and quickly overpowering the second steel gate. They managed to escape with the high-value handbags, including popular models like the Kelly and Birkin, before the police arrived.
Despite the shocking loss, GINZA XIAOMA has completed compensation procedures for all affected consignors, absorbing the financial hit themselves, as the stolen items were not insured. Mr. Chao noted that the store had around 440 Hermès handbags, meaning the stolen items represented roughly 15% of their inventory.
In light of the incident, the store is now working with security experts to enhance protection measures, including the potential installation of more robust gates and better security for display cases. They are also considering insurance for their valuable inventory moving forward.
Industry insiders suggest that Hermès bags have become targets due to the brand’s “allocation” policy, which requires customers to purchase other items before qualifying to buy high-demand handbags. This scarcity drives up market prices, making them attractive for thieves looking to resell quickly.
Mr. Chao has advised the public to be vigilant when purchasing Hermès handbags at prices significantly lower than market value to avoid inadvertently buying stolen goods. The store is collaborating with police to track the stolen items and ensure that potential buyers are aware of the risks.
