AURORA, Neb. (KSNB) – A Giltner man will spend some time in jail after one of his dogs was found frozen to death in January.
According to Hamilton County District Court documents, 60-year-old Kevin Jemison was sentenced on Wednesday to a term of 30 days at the Hamilton County Jail and then two years of probation.
Jemison was charged with felony cruel neglect of an animal resulting in death and felony neglect of an animal causing serious illness or injury. But those charges were reduced as part of a plea agreement in May.
He pleaded no contest to attempted abandon/cruelly neglect animal, a class I misdemeanor.
Court records indicate that on Jan. 14, a Hamilton County deputy found one of Jemison’s dogs frozen to death in his backyard. Another dog was found shivering and unsteady on her feet. The dog was taken to an Aurora veterinarian and her body temperature was 10 degrees below normal. The surviving dog was also found with frost burns on two legs.
The surviving dog has been turned over the the Aurora Vet Clinic for adoption.
As part of Jemison’s probation, the court ordered that Jemison “shall not own animals solely dependent on his care, except for the defendant’s bird.” He also is ordered to actively participate in and successfully complete the Owner Responsibility course through the Nebraska Humane Society, the Crime Victim Empathy Course and Responsible Decision-Making Class.
