HOUGHTON & HANCOCK, Mich. (WLUC) – Saturday was the 3rd day of Houghton County’s Bridgefest.
Dogs and their owners gathered in Hancock to support Presley who has bone cancer. His Puppy Party Fundraiser raised funds to cover treatment costs. It was just one of the fundraisers part of the 38th annual Bridgefest.
“Presley is the same if not more energetic,” Frann Grossman, a friend of Presley, said. “I don’t know what they’re giving him with chemo and I don’t know what dogs get but he’s just amazing.”
There were raffle baskets, races and photo sessions.
Event Organizer Paige Lewandowski says Presley isn’t just a dog but a community volunteer. Presley was a search and rescue dog for Superior Searchers, but due to cancer, the vet had to amputate his leg. However, he’s not gonna let that stop him.
“Even if it was a dog without a job, part of the power of Houghton County is that we are there for each other in times of need, and I think all dogs are not just dogs but members of our family,” Lewandowski said.
In Houghton, the Houghton High School Hockey Team put on its 2nd annual cornhole tournament fundraiser. 19 teams competed to raise funds for traveling costs.
“The Bridgefest community appreciates another thing that people can participate in,” said Head Hockey Coach Micah Stipech. “We got a lot of fathers and sons, we’ve had friends do it, different groups of people, and it’s something everybody can do.”
He says the community helped raise a thousand dollars last year.
“For our kids to come out here and see their faces not through a face mask but see who they are and be part of the community is really positive for us,” Stipech said.
An event that connects people beyond the bridge.
