If you like dogs, you’ll love Bark ‘n Brews, a new indoor/outdoor cafe/dog park opening May 30 in Nanuet.
Brittanie O’Dell owns the adjoining Paw Pals doggie daycare, but at one point had been in the food and beverage business. She said the idea of a dog-friendly cafe had been brewing in her mind for a while, as there aren’t a lot of places where both dogs and their human companions can be social together.
When she moved her daycare from Garnerville to Nanuet two years ago, she realized she had the space to make it happen.
Luckily her husband, Jason, is handy (he’s a contractor). He built the indoor bar area and outfitted the back, which is outside but enclosed, so that dogs and their pet parents can hang out, eat, drink and play. (Large and small dogs each have their own separate space.)
String lights hang above an assortment of chairs and tables, along with a picnic table, all of which are placed on artificial turf. There are fans and TVs, as well as a plastic fire hydrant and orthopedic dog beds.
Safety is key at Bark ‘n Brews in Nanuet
O’Dell said having a safe environment for all is a crucial part of the new space. All dogs must be vaccinated and are monitored by Bark ‘n Brews staff.
To make the place a year-round destination, there’s also an indoor area, with more chairs and tables as well as a new bar, where dogs are not allowed.
As much thought that went into the play areas also went into the food and drink, which have a fresh, local focus. O’Dell is sourcing wine and beer from New York state, namely from Round Table Brewery in Garnerville, Red Barn Cidery in Congers, Menagerie Beer in Garnerville and Keuka Springs Vineyard in the Finger Lakes. They’re listed on the menu under “Empire State of Mind.”
Barks ‘n Brews will also have its own brew, thanks to Menagerie, called the Loyal Lager. O’Dell said the “light and crisp” beer should be available in about a month.
‘Al Paw-stor’ tacos for you, ‘barkcuterie’ for your pup
As for the food, O’Dell said she’s excited to meld together her two passions with a menu that plays on the canine theme. Diners will find everything from “Tail-wagging Toasties” to “Fetch fries,” tossed with garlic parmesan or smoky paprika, to “Paw-some pizzas” (available gluten-free and regular). Then there’s “Taco ‘Bout a Treat” with items like “Al Paw-stor Tacos” and “Fetching’ Fresh Ahi.”
Other items include Hot Honey Pupperoni pizza, Bark-BQ slow roasted pork, Muttzarella Sticks and a Dogfather cannoli.
Diners will order at the bar and get a notification on their phone when it’s ready.
“Coming from a food and beverage background, I didn’t want to just serve fried bar food,” said O’Dell. “It was really important for me to have something fresh. So you’re not just here for your dog; you’re also here for yourself.”
Keeping furry foodies in mind, there are also a variety of treats for Fido. Among them, a peanut butter taco (a tortilla gently folded around peanut butter with a dollop of pumpkin purée on oat crumble), a pup cup (whipped cream with peanut butter); barkcuterie (dehydrated beef strips, assorted jerky apple slices and peanut butter), and chicken and sweet potato (chicken strips with sweet potato purée).
Gourmet dog biscuit cookies are also available.
O’Dell did a soft opening May 17 for members only but, provided you register your dog (and ensure all their vaccinations are up to date), anyone and everyone is welcome going forward, even if you don’t have a pet.
Said O’Dell: “We have capacity for about 40 people and 40 dogs so we’ll see how it goes.”
