Front Row Focus: Diamond Dogs down to final home weekend series

by JJ Sledge

There are just three regular season games left in the 2025 Bulldog Baseball season.

Three months ago, at 4 p.m. on a Valentines Day afternoon, the Dogs kicked off their season. And now, it’s nearly over.

On Monday night, I went to Rotolo’s and listened to the final coaches show of 2025. While Coach Burroughs primarily talked about this past weekend’s series and some of the seniors, he subtlety mentioned a couple of times how different this season had been. And I would agree with him 100%.

This has arguably been one of the stranger seasons in recent memory, and definitely the most weather influenced season in a long time. Games have been moved up, moved back, and even been delayed a day. And two games were either canceled or ruled a no contest.

On the field side, Tech has lost seven games by two runs or less and six of those have come in conference play. Coach mentioned Monday that Conference USA is the 5th best conference in the country this year, only behind the “Power 4,” and that the regular season champ won’t be known until Saturday night for the 2nd or 3rd year in a row. And yes, it makes you wonder if half of those games were wins how different this season might be.

To be honest, we’ve been spoiled these past five years at the new Love Shack. Tech has hosted two conference tournaments, hosted the 2021 NCAA Tournament Ruston Regional, and been to three NCAA tournaments overall.

Yes, it will take claiming the C-USA tournament championship to advance to a regional for a third time in four years. But this team still has a chance to flip the switch and make a run. And they need the fans to show up.

There are still three home games left this season. The players, especially the Seniors, don’t need to see a half full stadium as they play their last home games of 2025. Saturday will be the last time you see these seniors, many of whom have become fan favorites, play at the Love Shack.

The “new” Love Shack has become one of the best mid-major facilities in the country, and the fan base is a large part of that. Tech has won 70% of its home games since the doors opened in 2021, and players always say the crowd keeps them going. And it’s a place that’s family friendly, and where kids can get to know the players they grow up watching and imitating. DBU’s coach even said that the Friday night game earlier this year felt like a regional atmosphere.

These players still need your support. They don’t need negative comments that are intentionally said loud enough that both the players and their parents can hear them. They need people who believe in them and think they can still finish the season strong.

I would remind fans of this: these are 18-23 year old student athletes who are imperfect human beings. They are going to make mistakes. They are going to have off days hitting and pitching. But they’re still going to show up and play each game until the season ends.

If you aren’t able to come to any of the games this weekend, either sell your tickets via the Tech ticket program or give them away. Because I guarantee there are some people who’d like to come to even just one game that might think tickets are sold out.

If you’re a student reading this, show up to games. I get its close to finals, but you get in free, so claim your tickets and show up for each game. Let your classmates know they have your support.

If there are any alumni reading this who live within driving distance of the Lynchburg, Virginia area, come watch some games when the Dogs play in the conference tournament next week.

And if you are coming to a game, try to be there as close to the start time as possible. Be loud and stay as long as you can. On Saturday, make sure to be there early for the Senior Day festivities. It may be warm, but that’s just baseball weather.

Let’s show these Diamond Dogs the best support possible as they begin to wrap up the 2025 season.

The Favicon for the website, dogsandpurses(dot)com, features an all-black background with a minimalist line drawing of a puppy's head poking out of a stylish purse. The puppy's head is drawn with a cute and friendly expression, making it the focal point of the design. The purse, which the puppy is emerging from, is depicted with clean, elegant lines. The contrast between the black background and the white line drawing creates a striking and modern look for the Favicon.
