
Bing the Great Dane from Newton made it onto the silver screen, starring in a new movie called The Friend. The film features actors such as Bill Murray and Naomi Watts. The 150-pound Great Dane is named Apollo in the film.Bing’s handler Bev Klingensmith says knowing commands was a big part of his role.”It was general obedience and a lot of his temperament, kind of being unflappable around the cameras and the people and the noise,” she explained. He knows a lot of tricks and learned some new ones for the film. “Carry an object in his mouth, which did not come naturally to him as a Dane and not a retriever. He had to learn to scratch on a door, which was nothing he’d ever done before,” Klingensmith said. Filming took about three months in New York last year. Since the film came out two weeks ago, Klingensmith and Bing have been busy with national TV appearances.”Just honored to be part of it. Honored to be representing the breed, our hometown, everything. It has been quite an honor and a privilege to be part of it,” Klingensmith said. The movie is playing in theaters across the world, but the proudest fans are at Capitol II Theater in Bing’s hometown.
