41 dachshunds were seized from an alleged breeding operation in Lorain. Another 13 dogs were rescued from a house fire in Elyria.
ELYRIA, Ohio — The Friendship Animal Protective League says it has rescued a total of 54 dogs from “extremely unsanitary” conditions in two different Lorain County locations over the past week.
Officials say the first seizure occurred last Thursday in Lorain, where members of the FAPL’s humane investigations unit found 41 dachshunds along with one parrot at an alleged breeding operation. The agency received assistance from the Lorain County Sheriff’s Office during the raid, and claims the dogs were “stacked in filthy crates in a garage” while suffering from “dental disease, matting, emaciation, and overgrown nails.”
Three days later, a fire broke out at a home in Elyria, and one dog died of smoke inhalation. According to the FAPL, 13 additional dogs were discovered living in bad conditions inside the home’s basement, with 10 being malnourished.
All dogs are now being cared for at the FAPL shelter in Elyria, with a hearing to be scheduled to determine where the 41 dachshunds and one parrot will be housed during potential criminal proceedings. The 13 dogs saved from the house fire were given up by their owner, authorities say.

“We encourage both animal owners and others to come forward and ask for help or otherwise report animal neglect promptly,” FAPL Executive Director Greg Willey said in a statement. “Many of these situations can be avoided if animal neglect is not allowed to escalate to this point.”
