Downtown Coeur d’Alene is going to the dogs Friday.
During ArtWalk from 5 to 8 p.m., canines from Companions Animal Center in need of homes will be at Sherman Avenue shops as part of “Fridays with Fido.”
Anita C. Parisot, CAC event and volunteer coordinator, said the event was born from an idea she proposed to Abby Light, executive director of Coeur d’Alene Arts and Culture Alliance, after seeing so many dogs enjoying Friday ArtWalk.
“My goal was to connect adoptable dogs with our community in a creative, engaging way,” she said.
It has been effective
Vicky Nelson, CAC development director, said they adopted six dogs through Fridays with Fido last year and one so far this year, with the first one in May.
CAC will have dogs downtown during ArtWalk through October.
Parisot praised Light and Amy Hebert with the Coeur d’Alene Dog Fanciers for making the program successful.
“They’ve been key partners from the very beginning,” she said. “Their support, ideas, and shared love for dogs have helped this event thrive.”
Some of the downtown stores that will have dogs up for adoption include All Things Irish, Mix It Up Gift and Mix It Up Home, Magpie, and Mountain Madness Soap Company.
Also during ArtWalk, there will be a Canine Bridge photo display at Coeur d’Alene Rotary Centennial Park, musicians and live painting by Jim Sullivan.
