French bulldogs. Golden retrievers. German shepherds. Even rare dogs like the Azawakh and the bracco Italiano.
You’ll find all those breeds and many more at this week’s City of Palms Dog Show. In all, about 150 breeds will be represented at Lee Civic Center, according to the show’s assistant chairwoman, Patti More.
Nearly 4,000 dogs will be competing in six American Kennel Club competitions over four days, More says.
Even better: Admission and parking are both free.
The show’s organizers want as many people as possible to come out, see some of the top purebred dogs in the country and have fun, More says. “You can meet dogs up close and personal, and meet their handlers.”
City of Palms Dog Show: What you need to know about the North Fort Myers event
This year’s City of Palms Dog Show features two different dog clubs operating under the same roof. First up is the Highlands County area’s Heartland Dog Club of Florida on Thursday, May 15. That will be followed by the Greater Fort Myers Dog Club from Friday through Sunday, May 16-18.
The cluster-style dog show is a good way for the clubs to share resources, More says. It saves money, and volunteers from both clubs can share the burden of running the event.
Dogs of many breeds will go before the judges during the four-day event. To see the schedule and when each breed competes, visit tinyurl.com/mr23hvsh.
“The dogs are competing in their breed,” More says. “Most of the dogs are really competing there to earn championship points. And then dogs that are already champions are competing to win grand championship points and rankings within the AKC.”
Other daily activities include a puppy show with 109 puppies competing across all four days and the popular Fast CAT (Coursing Ability Test) races — a timed 100-yard dash where dogs run one at a time and chase a fluffy white lure.
FAST CAT is open to all dogs, not just ones competing in the AKC shows, More says. “They do not have to be an AKC-registered dog. So any dog can come out and run, and they can earn a FAST CAT title.”
The puppy show starts at 11:30 a.m. Thursday and Friday, 10 a.m. Saturday and noon Sunday. FAST CAT takes place throughout the day.
Dog show hours are 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday through Sunday, May 15-18. The show is both inside and outside at Lee Civic Center, 11831 Bayshore Road, North Fort Myers.
