Free best friends offered at Horry County Animal Care Center

Want a friend for life who will love you unconditionally?

The Horry County Animal Care Center can help you make that connection.

The shelter off Industrial Road in Conway is filled to capacity with 233 dogs and cats. Of those, county public information officer Adrianna Seals said, 105 are available for immediate adoption.

Shelter officials said Monday, July 15, that they hope to clear some space by participating in a pair of upcoming adoption events — PetSmart National Adoption Week and PickMe!SC, a statewide adoption effort.

The PetSmart event will be held July 15-21 at PetSmart’s Myrtle Beach location at 1301 Oak Forest Lane. Cats from the county shelter are always available at the store, and kennel staff will bring some adoptable dogs from 3-7 p.m. on Wednesday, July 17.

The statewide campaign will include free giveaways for adoptions at the Animal Care Center from July 20-28.

All adoptions are fee-free, and the animals come spayed or neutered, vaccinated and microchipped. The Animal Care Center is open from 10:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays through Fridays, and 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturdays.

Shelter officials introduced the news media to three of the dogs on Monday.

Candy Corn is a 2-year-old lab, brown in color and obsessed with water. Seals said he’ll even try to catch raindrops. A long-termer, he’s been in the shelter for 266 days.

Papaya, a 2-year-old white pit bull terrier, is described as friendly but shy. She’s been waiting for a home for 209 days.

Fox, a 2-year-old tan Lab, headed straight for the pool when released in the yard. He’s been at the shelter for more than two months.

While the dogs played, their companions in the kennel barked and barked.

“It’s stressful for animals to stay in a shelter,” Kennel Manager Naomi Jenkins said.

If you’d like to give a pet a try before formally adopting, or you just want to give a dog a break from shelter life, the Animal Care Center also has fostering programs. You can take a dog for a day, three days, or an entire holiday.

The Favicon for the website, dogsandpurses(dot)com, features an all-black background with a minimalist line drawing of a puppy's head poking out of a stylish purse. The puppy's head is drawn with a cute and friendly expression, making it the focal point of the design. The purse, which the puppy is emerging from, is depicted with clean, elegant lines. The contrast between the black background and the white line drawing creates a striking and modern look for the Favicon.
