ASHTABULA — Four people and two dogs were rescued Saturday morning from a vessel that was taking on water on Lake Erie, off the Ashtabula shoreline.
The United States Coast Guard Sector Eastern Great Lakes received a mayday broadcast from a 22-foot sports craft taking on water.
A U.S. Coast Guard Station Erie boat crew was sent out from Station Ashtabula to respond, according to Petty Officer 2nd Class Jessica Fontenette.
“This was about 6 nautical miles northwest of Ashtabula,” she said. “There were also three good samaritan vessels in the area that ended up coming on scene to help. The good samaritans and the station crew were able to pull three people and the dogs off the distress vessel. The captain stayed on board and they tried to get the boat underway again. With the help of the good samaritans and captain on board, they were able to get that boat underway. It was escorted back to Ashtabula harbor.”
The four people and two dogs, all wearing personal flotation devices, were rescued with no medical concerns.
