Founder of Phoenix Rising dog rescue in Pensacola heartbroken as rising cost force closure

PENSACOLA, Fla. — A Pensacola Animal rescue is closing its doors after serving the community for 10 years due to the cost of care getting too expensive.

The owner is now trying to place dogs in homes as quickly as possible.

“I love what I do, “Founder of Phoenix Rising Rescue Carrie Turner said. “I love these dogs, I’m passionate about our community and making a difference.”

Turner has been rescuing animals for about 13 years. She founded Phoenix Rising Rescue in 2014.

Over the last ten years, she says she’s helped more than 2,500 dogs.

Turner says the rescue has to close because of costs and personal issues.

“It’s becoming more difficult for rescues to treat, spay, and neuter the animals they take in at reasonable costs so they can adopt them out,” Turner said.

She says spay and neuter costs increased from $75 when she first opened.

“So just this month that cost went up to $250 for a spay-neuter and that’s my cost, that’s a rescue discounted,” Turner said. “You still again have vaccines on top of that flea and heartworm prevention, so we’re roughly spending between $350 and $400 now on a healthy dog just have to basic vetting done so that they can be adopted. Two years ago we were sitting at $200, so it’s almost doubled in two years.”

She’s looking to have the fur babies adopted before the doors close in three to four weeks.

Turner says there will be a fundraiser later this week to help cover their care.

“There are ongoing care costs of food, flea, and heartworm prevention until these animals are adopted,” Turner said.

She says closing the rescue is painful.

“It’s a huge loss,” Turner said. “It feels like losing a loved one because I’m losing a passion and something I love very much.”

This will start another chapter Turner needs to adjust to, but the future is still unknown.

“Ideally someday I hope I’m back in a position where I can continue but we’ll see,” Turner said.

She says this job has been hard but also rewarding to connect with animals and the community.

The Favicon for the website, dogsandpurses(dot)com, features an all-black background with a minimalist line drawing of a puppy's head poking out of a stylish purse. The puppy's head is drawn with a cute and friendly expression, making it the focal point of the design. The purse, which the puppy is emerging from, is depicted with clean, elegant lines. The contrast between the black background and the white line drawing creates a striking and modern look for the Favicon.
