Florida boy killed in dog attack, deputies say; Sheriff to give update Tuesday

Volusia County Sheriff Mike Chitwood is expected to provide details about the dog attack that left an 8-year-old boy dead during a briefing on Tuesday.

The news conference is set to begin at noon. FOX 35 News will stream it live when it begins in the above video player.

What we know: The attack occurred just before 5 p.m. Monday evening in a neighborhood north of DeLand, near Arabesque Drive and Airport Road, according to deputies. Witnesses called 911 and performed CPR on the child, but he succumbed to his injuries at the scene.

Deputies and Volusia County Animal Services responded, capturing two dogs involved in the attack. Officials described one as a pit bull and the other as a mixed breed. Both animals have been confiscated and placed in quarantine.

What’s next: The two dogs have been captured. A joint investigation is underway to determine the circumstances leading to the attack. 

What we don’t know: It is not immediately known what will happen to the two dogs involved in this attack or whether the owners will face any charges.
