It is estimated that approximately 3.9 million dogs are abandoned or are given to shelters each year in the United States. Abandoned pets are often dumped in rural areas and left to fend for themselves. Many of these dogs suffer malnutrition, serious injury, or death. In some cases, their search for food causes them to be a burden on neighboring farmers, when the starving strays attack livestock or poultry in an attempt to survive.
