PORTLAND Ore. (KPTV) – A group of shelter dogs from Los Angeles are now available for adoption through Portland dog rescue One Tail At A Time, which hosted their first adoption event of the year on Saturday.
On Jan. 12, One Tail At A Time’s executive director Juli Zagrans and a group of volunteers picked up seven shelter dogs from LA at the airport in Troutdale, to help make room for animals displaced by the wildfires.
“It’s been a bit of a whirlwind, but it’s been absolutely amazing to see the response from folks interested in helping, particularly the dogs from LA,” Zagrans said.
Amy Vander Vliet has been fostering and volunteering with One Tail At A Time since 2020. Most recently, she had been fostering Griffith, a male lab mix from LA. When Vander Vliet heard about the wildfires, she said she was happy to find a way to help.

“If his kennel made space for a dog that was displaced by the fires, then that’s 100% worth it,” Vander Vliet said.
Doors opened at noon for Saturday’s adoption event and it didn’t take long for the building to fill up with families looking to adopt a dog.
One Tail At A Time isn’t a typical animal shelter. Instead of kennels, the organization immediately places the dogs with a foster home.
Zagrans said it’s a special experience to see the progress the dogs make, even in such a short amount of time.
“To see them go from in the shelter, to getting to settle into their foster homes, to now meeting adopters and going home with them is really cool,” Zagrans said.
Saturday turned out to be Griffith’s lucky day as Beckie Shields and her husband adopted him.
“He’s been through a lot in the last couple weeks and so we’ll give him a place to decompress and have fun,” Shields said. “I think we’re going to have a lot of fun together.”
Zagrans said it’s likely that One Tail At A Time will take in more dogs from LA if needed.
