BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — April 11, 2025 — Firefighters with the Monroe Fire Protection District rescued four dogs from a burning home Friday morning in the 6900 block of South McCormick Lane, according to a press release from the fire department.
Crews were initially dispatched to the intersection of South Fairfax Road and South McCormick Lane after 911 callers reported smoke in the area. A Monroe County Sheriff’s deputy in the vicinity located the fire and reported visible flames coming from a boarded-up residence, with the occupancy status unknown.
MFD Ambulance 22 was the first unit to arrive and found heavy fire engulfing the structure. With the possibility that someone could be inside, the ambulance crew immediately put on firefighting gear and conducted a primary search.
During the search, firefighters discovered and rescued four dogs. A cat was also located but did not survive.
Additional fire crews quickly arrived and deployed hose lines, knocking down the fire within minutes. The house, which was undergoing renovations, sustained significant damage. No people were injured, and the homeowner was not present during the fire.
An investigation by the Monroe Fire Protection District determined the cause of the fire to be an electrical failure. The rescued dogs were taken to a local animal shelter for care.
Responding units included MFD Ambulance 22, Engines 22, 21, 23, 29, and 39, Battalion 22, Chief 23, and the MFD Fire Marshal.
