Top, Jersey Shore Firefighter Matt Taylor prepares to put a cat into a car that rushed the feline to a veterinarian after being rescued from a house fire at 1200 Fairview Drive, Montoursville, above, on Tuesday morning. This cat and a second one rescued from the house both needed oxygen after suffering from smoke inhalation. Both cats were expected to make a full recovery, police said.

With the family’s three dogs and a cat, a mother and a daughter safely escaped their Montoursville home Tuesday morning when a basement fire erupted at 1200 Fairview Drive.

Firefighters rescued two other cats from a smoked-filled second-floor bedroom. Both were administered oxygen at the scene and then whisked away to Loyalsock Animal Hospital, where they both were expected to make a full recovery, borough police were told The woman’s husband was not home, but he soon arrived on the scene as firefighters were putting out the fire.

“The fire tripped an alarm in the house about 7:20 a.m., alerting the 911 center. At the same time, the homeowner called 911 to report her house was on fire,” Montoursville Deputy Fire Chief Jeff Hutchins said.

Borough Police Chief Jeffrey Gyurina, the first on the scene, said there was heavy smoke coming from the open front door and other sides of the house.

The mother said she “heard something pop,” Gyurina said.

Hutchins said the fire was confined to the basement and brought under control in about 15 minutes.

“There is smoke damage on the first and second floors. The family will be displaced for a while, and they will have to have professional cleaners come in,” Hutchins said.

The homeowners, whose names were not released, have insurance to cover the fire damage, he added.

A state police fire marshal was at the scene looking into the cause of the fire.

Besides Montoursville, firefighters from Loyalsock Township, the city, and Jersey Shore responded to the fire.
