WILLOWS, Calif. — A family lost their home and two dogs in a house fire early Monday morning. The cause, according to the Willows Fire Department (WFD), was determined to be accidental, originating where a space heater was being used.
Firefighters from the WFD responded to a reported residential structure fire at 644 N Shasta Street in Willows just before 7 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 27. They said the initial responding engine immediately requested additional resources after seeing a large, black smoke column coming from the blaze while leaving the station.
The WFD said the fire engine arrived within three minutes and found a single-story home engulfed in flames. An adjacent structure was also beginning to ignite.
Firefighters launched an aggressive attack, protecting the adjacent structure and containing the fire to the building of origin. Officials said that additional crews conducted a primary search of the home while simultaneously battling the flames.
The WFD reported that the family was not home at the time, and no injuries were reported. However, they confirmed two dogs perished in the fire.
After the Willows and Orland fire departments investigated, officials determined that the fire was accidental. It originated in the living room, where a space heater was in use. The home was declared a total loss, and the family of three was displaced.
