MIDDLETOWN – A house fire broke out on the afternoon of April 20 in the Belford section of Middletown, killing three dogs despite resuscitation efforts, authorities said.
At 4:17 p.m., the Middletown Township Fire Department responded to a structure fire on Henry Drive, Rob Allen, spokesperson for the department, said.
As Middletown Township Police and Deputy Chief Daniel Kelly were responding, Chief Kelly saw a large column of smoke in the air and requested an upgraded assignment, bringing additional units into the scene, according to Allen. Belford Independent Fire Company, Belford Engine Fire Company, East Keansburg Fire Company, Port Monmouth Fire Company, Old Village Fire Company, and Community Fire Company responded.
First arriving units from both Belford companies began suppression operations, with Belford Independent placing their ladder truck into operations to cut open the roof to release heat and smoke from the structure, while Belford Engine began extinguishing the blaze, Allen said. Additional companies arrived and assisted with search and rescue operations, handling additional tasks on the fire scene, and standing by as a Rapid Intervention Team.
Around 55 firefighters responded, Allen said. No injuries were reported, but despite resuscitation attempts by first responders, three dogs died as a result of the fire.
The fire is under investigation by the Middletown Township Fire Marshal’s office under the direction of Edward “Buddy” Skelly.
