Farm dog who is best friends with fawn melts hearts: “Fox and the Hound”

Hearts have well and truly been melted by an adorable video showing the friendship between a dog and a deer that looks as though it’s straight out of a Disney cartoon.

The clip, which was posted by TikTok user Sarah Ransom (@sransom126), shows the black rescue dog letting the young deer sniff her face and nuzzling their heads together gently. The sweet duo appeared very at ease with one another and were happy to unwind together on the farm in Monroe County, Florida.

The “besties” have delighted the internet, and in just a matter of days, the video has gained more than 5.8 million views and over 976,700 likes since it was shared on July 9.

But this wasn’t just a one-off encounter, because Ransom has continued sharing more clips of the dog and fawn on TikTok since they went viral. She’s shared multiple videos of the deer, named Ellie, interacting with the other animals on her farm, often acting like one of the other dogs.

Social grooming is predominantly a way to remove external parasites, particularly around the face and neck area, but it can also allow deer to build and maintain bonds, according to Whitetails Unlimited. They would usually do this with other deer, often those subordinate to them, but this baby deer wanted to treat the black dog as one of her own instead.

While this rescue pup and deer certainly appear to have formed an adorable friendship, that isn’t always the case when dogs meet livestock. Owners should be cautious of any deer encounters, as animal charity Blue Cross, based in the United Kingdom, highlights that deer are likely to become aggressive during birthing season (May-July), or mating season (September-November).

Not all deer will be as calm as this one however, so owners should closely monitor their pets around wild animals. Blue Cross recommends keeping a safe distance of at least 50 meters or approximately 164 feet.

Following any wild animal encounters, cute as they may be, owners should thoroughly check their pets over for fleas and ticks. If your four-legged friend gets close to a deer, or an area filled with them, they should receive a thorough clean afterwards—even if they aren’t happy about it.
